~2 AH · 2 AH
Some allies of the Quraysh slipped into Madinah at night, stole a number of camels, and killed one or two herders. When the Prophet ﷺ found out, he gathered 70 of the Muhajirun and went after them. The chase brought the Muslims to the Plain of Badr for the first time, which is how this expedition got its name. The raiders were only four or five men and much faster, so they escaped, and the Prophet ﷺ was unable to catch them.
As a result, the Prophet ﷺ decided he needed scouts to keep track of the movements of the Quraysh and their allies, including their caravans to Yemen. This led directly to the Sariyya Nakhla.
Outcome: The raiders escaped; no captures were made.
It is also called Ghazwa Badr al-Ula (the First Battle of Badr). Apart from taking place at the same spot, it has nothing to do with the Major Battle of Badr (Badr al-Kubra), and it did not involve the Quraysh themselves. It shows that not every expedition of the Prophet ﷺ ended in success.
