By Allah, I will not wash until I have avenged Badr.
~About 2-3 months after Badr, early Dhu al-Hijjah 2 AH (c. 624 CE) · 2 AH
About two or three months after Badr, probably early in Dhu al-Hijjah, Abu Sufyan set out to take revenge. He had vowed not to bathe, not even the ritual bath after marital relations, until he had avenged Badr. He gathered around 150 to 200 men of the Quraysh. Before the attack, the Jewish tribe of Banu Nadir gave his party protection, food, supplies and water. This broke their pact with the Muslims under the Constitution of Madinah, which forbade helping the Quraysh against them. Abu Sufyan's men then raided one of the date gardens of Madinah. They killed two men of the Ansar and burned the garden.
When the Muslims rode out after them, Abu Sufyan's men fled on their camels. To lighten their load, they cut loose their bags of sawiq, a dried travel porridge made of barley, milk, butter and honey. The Muslims picked up a large amount of it, but Abu Sufyan himself escaped unharmed.
Outcome: Abu Sufyan returned to Makkah having avenged Badr enough to end his vow, though the Muslims captured much of the abandoned sawiq.
Named for the sawiq the fleeing Quraysh abandoned. The Banu Nadir's hosting of Abu Sufyan's raiding party before the attack on Madinah was blatant treachery against the Constitution of Madinah.
