12 Safar, 2 AH (11 months after the Hijrah) · 2 AH
Al-Abwa appears to have been the first military expedition of the Muslims. It took place in Safar of the 2nd year after the Hijrah, about 11 months after the Prophet ﷺ emigrated to Madinah. The Prophet ﷺ heard of a caravan of the Quraysh and led the Muslims out to intercept it. They could not reach it in time, so no battle took place.
During this expedition, the Prophet ﷺ made the first of many alliances with neighbouring tribes, with the Banu Damra. This extended the reach of the young Muslim state about 100 miles beyond Madinah.
Outcome: No battle took place. An alliance was made with the Banu Damra.
The first expansion of the Islamic state's political influence beyond Madinah itself, through alliance rather than conquest.
