~c. 1-2 AH, around the time of Badr
Early in the Madinan period, around the time of Badr, Allah revealed the first of three verses about alcohol and gambling (Qur'an 2:219). It told the believers that both carry great harm and some benefit, and that the harm outweighs the benefit. The verse hinted that they should avoid alcohol, but it did not yet forbid it.
This was the first phase of the gradual prohibition of alcohol in Islam. It encouraged believers to stay away from alcohol before it was later forbidden outright.
