~Shawwal, 6 AH · 6 AH
Most likely in Shawwal of 6 AH, Muhammad ibn Maslamah RA led 30 companions against the tribe of Banu Bakr ibn Kilab at al-Qurta'. It was a sariyya, an expedition that the Prophet ﷺ sent out without going himself. The expedition succeeded. On the way back, the companions came across a small, unguarded convoy. Something about it seemed strange, so they brought its members to the Prophet ﷺ as prisoners, without knowing whom they had caught. The Prophet ﷺ recognised one of them at once. He was Thumamah ibn Uthal, chieftain of the Banu Hanifa, one of the largest tribes in Arabia. His captivity and conversion to Islam became a well-known story of its own.
Outcome: The expedition achieved its objective against Banu Bakr ibn Kilab, and on the way home its men captured Thumamah ibn Uthal by chance.
This otherwise minor expedition is remembered mainly because its returning party captured Thumamah ibn Uthal by chance. That led to his three days as a prisoner in the Masjid of the Prophet ﷺ and, in the end, to his conversion to Islam.
