Uthman ibn Affan was married to Ruqayyah, a daughter of the Prophet ﷺ. She died shortly after the Battle of Badr, and Uthman, a shy man, remained unmarried for a time.
During that time, Umar ibn al-Khattab RA offered him his widowed daughter Hafsa. Uthman told him he did not want to marry just then. He was keeping a secret, because the Prophet ﷺ had mentioned Hafsa to him. The Prophet ﷺ married Hafsa himself, and Uthman went on to marry Ruqayyah's sister, Umm Kulthum, another daughter of the Prophet ﷺ.
Kept the bond between Uthman ibn Affan and the Prophet ﷺ's household intact after Ruqayyah's death.
