I stood at a distance, watching, with no one to support me. The Prophet ﷺ remained in sajdah, pinned by the weight, until someone went to tell Fatima.
~During the years of public persecution in Makkah (c. 613-615 CE)
One day the Prophet ﷺ was praying at the Ka'bah while Abu Jahal and other leaders of Makkah sat nearby. A camel had been slaughtered the day before. Abu Jahal asked which of them would bring its entrails and throw them on the Prophet ﷺ's back when he went down in prostration.
Uqba ibn Abi Mu'ayt went and fetched them. When the Prophet ﷺ prostrated, Uqba dumped the entrails on his back. The load was so heavy that the Prophet ﷺ stayed pinned in prostration, and the onlookers laughed until they fell over.
Ibn Mas'ud was watching from a distance. He had no tribe to protect him, so he could do nothing to help. Then someone went and told Fatima, the Prophet ﷺ's young daughter. She came running, crying, and pulled the entrails off her father's back.
When the Prophet ﷺ finished his prayer, he turned to the men, raised his voice and made du'a against them by name. The names were Abu Jahal (Amr ibn Hisham), Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah, al-Walid ibn Utbah, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, Uqba ibn Abi Mu'ayt and Umara ibn al-Walid. The narration in Sahih Muslim leaves the seventh name unrecalled, while the fuller narration in Sahih al-Bukhari names him. Ibn Mas'ud RA later said that he saw all of these men dead at the Battle of Badr, dragged and thrown into a well there.
Other events recorded around the same time. Their order within the year is not established; use the storyline above for the sequence.
I stood at a distance, watching, with no one to support me. The Prophet ﷺ remained in sajdah, pinned by the weight, until someone went to tell Fatima.
I ran to my father and removed the entrails from his back.
Who will bring the entrails of the camel and throw them on the back of Muhammad ﷺ when he is praying to his Lord?
Referring to a camel slaughtered the previous day, its entrails still lying near the Ka'bah.
I have brought the entrails and cast them upon Muhammad ﷺ as he prostrates.
O Allah! Take revenge on Quraysh. O Allah! Take revenge on Amr ibn Hisham, Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah, al-Walid ibn Utbah, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, Uqba ibn Abi Mu'ayt, and Umara ibn al-Walid.
Said after Uqba ibn Abi Mu'ayt placed a slaughtered camel's entrails on the Prophet ﷺ's back as he prostrated in prayer beside the Ka'bah, and the Quraysh laughed at him until Fatimah RA came and removed them.
I swear by the One who sent Muhammad ﷺ with the Truth, that I myself saw every one of these seven dead in the Battle of Badr. I saw their bodies dragged into the well and thrown into the Well of Badr.
These were the seven men the Prophet ﷺ named three times each in his du'a against them after the entrails were dumped on his back.
