A tribe neighboring the Quraysh; Ibn al-Daghina, who granted Abu Bakr RA protection, was its chief.
When the Muslims of Makkah were being persecuted and some were emigrating to Abyssinia, Abu Bakr RA set out to emigrate there as well. At Bark al-Ghimad he met Ibn al-Daghina, the chief of the tribe of Qara. Ibn al-Daghina asked where he was going. Abu Bakr replied that his people had driven him out, and that he wanted to travel the land and worship his Lord. Ibn al-Daghina said that a man like Abu Bakr, who helped the poor, kept good ties with his relatives and welcomed guests, should never be driven out. He offered Abu Bakr his protection (jiwar) so that he could go home and worship in Makkah. The Quraysh accepted this protection on condition that Abu Bakr did not pray in public. Abu Bakr then built a small mosque in front of his house and recited the Qur'an there. His recitation was so moving that women and children gathered to listen. The Quraysh felt this broke the condition. They told Ibn al-Daghina to make Abu Bakr worship only inside his house, or else to withdraw his protection. Ibn al-Daghina put the choice to Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr released him from the pact and said he was content with the protection of Allah.
