Khalid ibn Sufyan al-Hudhali, the chieftain of the large Bedouin tribe of Hudhayl, began gathering an army to launch a surprise attack on Madinah. When the Prophet ﷺ heard of this, he decided to strike first. He sent just one man, Abdullah ibn Unays al-Juhani, to kill the chieftain. The Prophet ﷺ told Abdullah that he would find Khalid in the Valley of Arana. Abdullah asked what Khalid looked like. The Prophet ﷺ replied, "When you see him, you shall feel more terrified than you have ever been at anybody's appearance." The Prophet ﷺ had never seen Khalid, so this knowledge came from Allah. Abdullah found Khalid in the valley, and his appearance terrified him just as he had been told. It was the time of the midday (Zuhr) prayer, and Abdullah did not want to miss it. So he prayed while walking, making the movements with his head. This was a form of what was later called the Prayer of Fear (Salat al-Khawf). Abdullah approached Khalid, who had only a few men with him. He asked whether Khalid was gathering an army and offered to join it. This was a ruse, and when the moment was right, he killed him.
