Al-Aswad ibn Abd al-Asad al-Makhzumi was a man of Banu Makhzum, the clan of Abu Jahal, who marched with the Quraysh to Badr in 2 AH. When the Quraysh reached the battlefield, they found that the Muslims had cut them off from the wells. Al-Aswad declared, "I will be the one to get water for you, or I will die trying." Before the single combats he came out toward the Muslims' cistern; Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib RA struck off his foot and half his shank, and when he crawled into the cistern to keep his oath, Hamzah killed him there.
