After the conquest of Khaybar, the nearby Jewish community of Fadak heard of the Muslims' victory and became afraid. No army marched against them and no threat was made. Even so, they sent a letter to the Prophet ﷺ on their own initiative. In it they agreed to the same terms that had been set for Khaybar, under which half of their produce would go to the Muslims.
Because no fighting or siege took place at Fadak, its income was not shared out among the army as ordinary spoils of war. Instead it became fay', property that came to the Prophet ﷺ without fighting, and he used it to support his family and the needy. After the Prophet ﷺ's death, Fadak became the subject of a well-known disagreement over its inheritance between Abu Bakr RA and Fatimah RA, the Prophet ﷺ's daughter.
