O people of Makkah! Do not be the last group to convert and the first group to renegade and apostatize.
~Shortly after the death of the Prophet ﷺ (11 AH) · 11 AH
When news of the Prophet ﷺ's death reached Makkah, many people there began to think about leaving Islam. Almost everyone then living in Makkah had become Muslim only after the Conquest of Makkah. Mobs gathered, and the governor whom the Prophet ﷺ had appointed over Makkah feared for his life and went into hiding. Suhayl ibn Amr had become one of the most devout of these new Muslims. He stood in front of the Ka'bah and gave the crowd a fiery warning. He told them not to be the last people to accept Islam and the first to abandon it. His words calmed the mobs and brought the governor out of hiding.
