In the lead-up to the Conquest of Makkah, the Prophet ﷺ called the Muslims to prepare for a large expedition but kept its destination secret. He did not tell even Abu Bakr RA or Aisha RA. According to Ibn Sa'd, he also sent a small scouting party of eight men north to Batn Idam. This gave the impression that the army would march north toward Syria, when in fact it would march south toward Makkah. Only on the day before the army set out did the Prophet ﷺ announce that they were going to Makkah.
It is a clear example of what the Prophet ﷺ meant when he said, "War is deceit." Deceiving the enemy in war, called khid'ah, is allowed. Treachery, called khiyanah, such as breaking an oath or a treaty, is never allowed.
