~10th of Ramadan, 10th year of the dawah (c. 620 CE) · 2 BH
Khadija RA passed away on the 10th of Ramadan, less than 40 days after the death of Abu Talib. The year of their deaths came to be called the Year of Sorrow (Aam al-Huzn). At that time the salah (prayer) had not yet been prescribed, so no funeral prayer was performed over her. The Prophet ﷺ took charge of her burial and placed her in the grave himself.
Khadija RA was the Prophet ﷺ's wife, his closest friend and his first supporter. She protected and comforted him at home, just as Abu Talib protected him outside it in Makkah. Losing them both so close together caused the Prophet ﷺ such grief that the sahaba (companions) said they did not see him smile for months. The whole year came to be called the Year of Sorrow (Aam al-Huzn).
