My father is Hashim.
~Several generations before the Prophet ﷺ's birth; exact date not given in the sources · 104 BH
Shayba was the son of Hashim, the great-grandfather of the Prophet ﷺ, and Salma, a businesswoman of Madinah. He grew up in Madinah with his mother, and at first the Quraysh knew nothing about him. One day Hashim's brother, al-Muttalib, saw the boy in the streets of Madinah. He recognized the family features in his face and asked who his father was. The boy proudly answered that his father was Hashim.
Al-Muttalib took Shayba back to Makkah. When the Quraysh saw the boy, they assumed he was al-Muttalib's new slave. They called him Abdul Muttalib, meaning "Muttalib's slave," and that became the name he was known by. Abdul Muttalib would later become the grandfather of the Prophet ﷺ.
